DHAKA, May 9 ,2019 (BSS) – Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Shahjahan Kamal today said Bangladesh has taken an initiative to ratify the Montreal convention to pave a way for Bangladeshi air travelers to get more insurance money in case of any accident or damage of baggage.
“Bangladesh has already become a signatory of the Montreal Convention. The ratification process is now waiting for vetting in the Law Ministry,” he said.
The Civil Aviation Minister came up with the disclosure when International Air Transport Association (IATA) vice president (Asia-Pacific Region) Conrad Clifford met him at his ministry office here.
The Montreal Convention is a multilateral treaty adopted by a diplomatic meeting of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) member states in 1999 that offers more compensation for the victims of air accidents.
The IATA is encouraging all ICAO members to ratify the Montreal Convention to provide more health insurance to the air passengers.
Kamal briefed the IATA’s high level delegation about various steps taken by the present government to ensure air safety and security in Bangladesh.
He sought IATA’s support in upgrading Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) to category-1 from existing category-2 as per the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) criteria.
