DIG (Prisons) of Sylhet range held over graft allegations

DHAKA, July 28, 2019 (BSS) – The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) today arrested Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) of Sylhet range Partha Gopal Banik after the anti-graft watchdog seized Taka 80 lakh from his residence in the capital.

ACC spokesman and deputy director Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told BSS that an ACC team conducted a drive at the residence of DIG (Prisons) Partha Gopal at Bhuter Goli in the city’s Dhanmondi area this afternoon and seized the money.

He said Partha Gopal earlier acted as the DIG (prisons) in Chattogram range before joining in Sylhet range.

Partha Gopal was allegedly involved in corruption and irregularities while serving as the DIG (Prisons) of Chattogram range, Pranab said.

Earlier in the day, Gopal and senior jail superintendant Prashanta Kumar Banik appeared before the ACC’s Segunbagicha office as they were asked to face the ACC’s quizzing today over graft allegations.

ACC director Mohammad Yousuf grilled DIG (Prisons) Partha Gopal for six hours starting from 10 am, Pranab said.

Later, he said, the ACC team launched a drive at the DIG (prisons) Dhaka residence and detained him after the team seized Taka 80 lakh from his house.
