Govt. undertakes massive post-flood rehabilitation program in Kurigram

RANGPUR, July 27, 2019 (BSS) – The government has embarked upon a smooth and well-coordinated post-flood-management and relief distribution program in Kurigram district to mitigate their sufferings of over 9.65 lakh people affected by the current deluge.

Kurigram district administration is closely monitoring the flood situation and distributing succor allocated by the government, donor organisations and NGOs among flood-hit people to mitigate their sufferings.

According to the official estimation over 9.65 lakh people of 2.40 lakh families have been affected by the flood. Sixty unions of all nine upazilas and three municipalities of the district were affected, Kurigram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sultana Pervin told BSS.

The government has allocated 1,700 tonnes of rice, Taka 30 lakh, 11,000 packets of dry food, 600 tents, Taka two-lakh for child foods and Taka two lakh for animal fodders. Besides, 6,427 tonnes of rice were allocated for distribution among 4.28 lakh beneficiaries under the Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) program.

In addition, the government has allocated 400 bundles of corrugated iron (CI) sheets and Taka 12 lakh for reconstruction of the damaged houses caused by flood and river erosion. District administration requested the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry for allocation of more 5,000 tonnes of rice, Taka one crore and 30,000 packets of dry foods for Kurigram to meet any situation in future,” the DC said.

Kurigram district administration is working in coordination with some international voluntary and donor organisations and local NGOs and extended supports for conducting relief activities, the DC said.

Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BRCS) has distributed Taka 22.50 lakh among 500 flood-hit families while World Food Programme (WFP) distributed over Taka 1.98 crore, 171 tonnes of high energy biscuits in flood-hit Sadar, Chilmari, Ulipur, Nageswari, Roumari and Rajibur upazilas. Local parliament member Selina Islam has distributed cash money and dry foods among flood-hit people of different upazilas in Kurigram.

District administration sources said a total of 1,853 families have become homeless due to river erosion and academic activities of 748 educational institutions remained suspended.

Floodwater inundated standing crops on 19,638 hectares of land and 6,248 ponds causing huge damage to fishery resources, DC Sultana said.

“We have taken coordinated steps with all government departments to recoup the losses caused by floods,” she added.
