CHATTOGRAM, May, 8, 2018 (BSS) – Construction works of the much awaited Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) with an estimated capacity of handling nearly 2.5 lakhs containers annually is progressing fast.
The under-construction terminal will be the second house to cope with the increasing demand of container handling.
The construction works of the PCT was scheduled to start in February, 2017, but earth filing works began in September last year with the target of completing the works of the new PCT by December 2019.
Engineering corps of Bangladesh Army implementing the terminal located between Chattogram Dry Dock and Boat Club on the bank of the river Karnaphuli.
Chairman of the CPA at a view exchange meeting on the Port Day said there is no alternative of PCT to mitigate the container congestions and increasing trend of cargo handling and the port users will get results of the PCT from the next year.
Port chairman further disclosed that after completion of PCT, the works of Multipurpose Terminal and Bay Terminal will also begin.
Omar Faruk , secretary of Chattogram Port Authority, said the new PCT will have four berths. Three berths will have 200 meters long for container vessels and remaining one is Dolphin oil jetty of 220 meters long.
Engineering department sources said there will be a railway track for carrying containers, locomotive sheds and the depth of the berths will be approximately 9.5 meters.
