NEW DELHI, May 8, 2018 (BSS/Xinhua) – India’s Nehru-Gandhi scion Rahul Gandhi Tuesday said that he would become the country’s next prime minister should the main opposition Congress emerge as the largest party in the 2019 general elections.
“If the Congress party is the biggest party, yes,” party president Gandhi said, in response to a question on whether he would become the next prime minister at a gathering in the southern city of Bengaluru.
The 47-year-old politician became the Congress party chief in December last year, after his mother Sonia Gandhi relinquished power after nearly 20 years in the position.
Rahul Gandhi is the sixth member of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty to lead the party. Three of them were prime ministers.
Born to Sonia and Rajiv Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi entered Indian politics in 2004, having stayed away from public sphere prior to that. He successfully contested the general elections in 2004 from Amethi, a seat that was earlier held by his father.
He won again from the same constituency in 2009 and 2014.
