Two to walk gallows over RU prof Rezaul murder

RAJSHAHI, May 8, 2018 (BSS)- Two members of banned militant outfit
Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) were sentenced to death and three
others awarded life-term imprisonment for killing Rajshahi University Prof
AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee in 2016.

Judge of Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal Shirin Kabita Akhter pronounced
the verdict in a jam-packed courtroom here this afternoon.

Of the convicted, Maskawat Hossain of Bogura and Shariful Islam, a
student of Prof Siddiquee’s department, have been awarded the capital
punishment.

The life-term awarded convicts are – Rahmat Ullah of Miapara in
Nilphamari and Abdus Sattar and his son Ripon Ali of Narkelbaria area in
Rajshahi metropolis.

On April 23 in 2016, Prof Rezaul, a teacher of English department of
Rajshahi University, was stabbed to death near his residence in the city’s
Shalbagan area while he was walking to board a bus of the university.

Professor Siddiquee’s son Riasat Imtiaz Sowrav filed a murder case with
Boalia police station accusing unnamed persons.

According to local police sources, he was a victim of targeted killings
orchestrated across the country by militants.

Police submitted a charge sheet against eight militants of banned outfit
JMB in November, 2016.

According to the charge sheet, Shariful Islam, a student of RU English
department student, was found responsible for planning the murder and others
took part in the killing mission directly.

Among the eight charge-sheeted, Khairul Islam Payal alias Badhan was
killed during the raid on Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka, and two others —
Nazrul Islam alias Bike Hasan and Tareque Hasan Milu alias Osman, were killed
in “crossfire” in Rajshahi and Bogura respectively.
