Two-day ‘Showcase Canada 2018’ begins in capital

 DHAKA, May 6, 2018 (BSS) – The two-day ‘Showcase Canada 2018’ began here today with a view to increase the two-way trade between Bangladesh and Canada to US$ 3 billion by 2021.

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed formally inaugurated the fourth edition of the trade and education fair at the International Convention City Bashundhara as the chief guest.

Canada Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CanCham) in association with the Canadian High Commission in Dhaka organised the fair.

Speaking on the occasion, Tofail said two-way trade between Bangladesh and Canada would surpass US$ 3 billion by 2021.

Mentioning that Canada is one of the largest markets for Bangladeshi RMG, he said the government has taken an initiative to export leather goods, jute products, frozen foods, software and ICT services to Canada.

The Canadian businessmen would be benefited if they invest in Bangladesh, said Tofail Ahmed, referring to the Prime Minister’s initiative of establishing 100 special economic zones in the country. “Bangladesh will provide all necessary cooperation to the Canadian investors.”

Canadian High Commissioner in Dhaka Benoit Prefontaine, CanCham vice president Kamal Uddin and South Asia Director General of Global Affairs Canada David Hartman also spoke.

A total of 33 business entities are taking part in the fair to showcase their products. The fair remains open from 10 am to 8pm.

Canada is one of the largest and growing trade partners of Bangladesh having two-way trade of Canadian US$ 2.50 billion of which more than C$ 1 billion is RMG export.
