Flood affects 35 unions in Sherpur

SHERPUR, July 20, 2019 (BSS) – Monsoon flood triggered by heavy rainfall
and onrush of hilly water inundated 35 villages in Sherpur district leaving
5,0000 families marooned.

Whip Md Atiur Rahman visited flood-hit areas of Betmari under Sadar upazila
of the district today and distributed relief materials among the flood
affected people.

Water Development Board sources said road communication between Sherpur and
Jamalpur has been snapped as the highways were inundated by floodwater.

Officials and representatives of local government bodies told BSS that
several hundred houses, roads and other infrastructures have been completely
or partially damaged alongside standing crops of vast tract of lands, which
went under water. Farmed fish of over 100 ponds were washed away, they added.

Flood situation in Sherpur district may deteriorate further, if monsoon
rains are likely to prolong, the Met Office sources said.

District administration sources said a total of 100 tonnes of rice were
distributed among flood victims in the district.

Low-lying areas in the district were flooded as water levels in the major
rivers rose sharply, Nobokumar Chowdhury, executive engineer of Water
Development Board of Nilphamari said.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Humayun Kabir said Aman paddy, vegetable and
other crops on vast tract of land have been submerged by floodwater.

Acting Deputy Commissioner ATM Ziaul Haque said alongside taking
initiatives to check damages of embankments, adequate relief materials have
been kept ready to aid the flood victims. A flood control room has been set
up in the district to tackle catastrophic situation of flood, he added.
