Overflowing Jamuna affects 4 lakh people in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, July 17, 2019 (BSS) – Overall flood situation in the district aggravated further as the mighty Jamuna continued to swell up submerging more areas and affecting about four lakh people.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Office said around 1415 families have taken shelter in 28 flood shelters in the district.

With the rising water level, 52 unions out of 68 unions in all the seven Upazilas of the district have been affected by flood. Besides, four municipality areas were also submerged by flood water.

Water Development Board sources said during the last 24 hours Jamuna rose by 21 cm and was flowing 161 cm over the red mark at Bahadurabad ghat point.

Department of Agricultural Extension sources said, standing crops on 13,645 hectares of land including Aush paddy on 3492 hectares, T-Aman seeds bed on 1659 hectares, jute on 5177 hectares, vegetable on 3025 hectares, Banana grove on 97 hectares, sugarcane on 5 hectares, summer maize on 25 hectares and Chilli on 175 hectares went under flood water in the district.

District primary Education Officer Md Shahidul Islam said 454 primary schools in Jamalpur district have been shut due to flood.

Assistant Inspector, District Education Office, Nahida Aktar said 106 high school, 51 Madrasa and 23 colleges were also closed down as flood water
entered those institutions. She said the floodwater forced to shut down
educational institutes and education office in Dewanganj Upazila.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer said 650 metric tonnes of rice
and Taka 9.50 lakh are being distributed among the flood victims.

Civil Surgeon Dr Goutam Roy said, “As most parts of the Jamalpur district
have been badly affected by floodwater, we have kept adequate number of water
purifying tablets to ensure pure drinking water for flood-hit people.”

Acting Deputy Commissioner, Rajib Kumar Sarkar said, “We are closely
monitoring the flood situation to prevent any catastrophic situation.”
