Preparations on to face floods on Brahmaputra basin

RANGPUR, May 03, 2018 (BSS) – The authorities concerned are taking preparations to face early flood situation, if any, in the flood-prone and low-lying areas of different northern districts situated on the Brahmaputra basin.

“We are taking preparations in association with local administrations to face any early flood situation,” Md Harun-Ar-Rashid, Superintending Engineer for Rangpur Circle-1 of Bangladesh Water Development Board (WDB) told BSS today.

“The maintenance and repairing works of the damaged portions of flood control embankments are running smoothly in the flood and erosion-prone areas of Rangpur, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha and Kurigram and other districts on the basin,” Rashid added.

The WDB authorities are maintaining liaison with the district administrations and Bangladesh Army to face flood situations.

Superintending Engineer for Thakurgaon Circle of WDB Mahbubur Rahman said the repairing works of damaged portions of flood control embankments would be completed by this month-end in Dinajpur, Panchagarh and Thakurgaon districts.

Talking to BSS, Executive Engineer of WDB for Gaibandha Md Mahbubur Rahman said repairing works of 2.50-kilometre damaged portions of the flood control embankments at many points would be completed soon in the district.

“Besides, repairing works of the badly damaged 320-metre long portion of flood control embankment at Kishamat Cherenga point on the Kartoa riverbank in Polashbari upazila of Gaibandha began at a cost of Taka 3 crore a couple of days ago,” he said.

Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hasan Ahmed said the district administrations would arrange meetings of the District Disaster Management Committees soon at eight district headquarters under Rangpur division to take preparations to face early floods, if any.

“The district administrations, District Relief and Rehabilitation Offices and WDB authorities will have adequate preparations to face any early flood situation anywhere in all eight districts under Rangpur division,” Ahmed added.
