Landslide leaves 5 dead in Sitakunda

CHITTAGONG, July 21, 2017 (BSS) – At least five people, including three children, of a family were killed after being hit by a landslide that triggered due to heavy downpour at Jangal Salimpur of Sitakunda upazila of the district early today.

The deceased were identified as Fatema, 30, her son Yusuf, 12, and sister- in-law Rabeya Khatun, 28, her daughters Samiya, 7 and Namiya, 5, said assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Sitakunda Police Station Tajul Islam.

They were buried when a big chunk of a hill, adjacent to their home fell on their house around 4:00am owing to incessant downpour for last three days.

The deceased were asleep at the time of mudslide and later locals dug up the earth and recovered the bodies.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nazmul Islam Bhuiyan said the family members were living in huts built on government-owned land in the remote hilly area, mostly inhabited by garments workers.
