‘Proper waste management is necessary to achieve SDGs’
DHAKA, July 15, 2019 (BSS) – Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister M Shahab Uddin
today said proper waste management is a must for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“The waste management is getting top priorities globally for achieving the SDGs,” the
minister said this as the chief guest while he was speaking at the inaugural session of a
workshop on global waste management at a city hotel here.
“It is impossible to develop the environment quality of the country without improving the
expertise on the waste management,” said the minister at the workshop organized by the
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry.
The 3Rs (reduction, reuse and recycling)pilot project have been taken by the Ministry and the
City Corporations for mandatory segregation of waste at source as well as creates a market for
recycled products and provides incentives for recycling of wastes.
The 3Rs pilot project will be implemented at all the city corporation areas across the country
in phases, if the pilot project turned out to be successful, the minister explained.
The government is equally providing attention to the plastic waste management, he said, adding
that so, the government is encouraging the use of Jute bags instead of polythene bags.
Deputy Minister for Environment Habibun Nahar, Additional Secretary Dr M Billal Hossen and
Director General of the South Asia Co-operative Environmental Programme (SACEP) Dr Abas Basir
all attended the workshop while Additional Secretary Dr SM Manjurul Hannan Khan presided the
meeting.
