Monsoon flood affects two lakh people in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, July 15, 2019 (BSS) – Monsoon flood has affected two lakh people in Jamalpur as water level of the Jamuna river has increased sharply during the past 24 hours.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Office sources said 29 unions in
Islampur, Madarganj, Dewanganj and Sarishabari upazila were inundated by
floodwater.

Low-lying areas of rest three upazilas Jamalpur Sadar, Melandaha and
Bakshiganj were also flooded, they said.

Department of Agricultural Extension sources said standing crops on 3462
hectares of land including Aush paddy on 960 hectares, T-Aman seeds bed on
460 hectares, jute on 1090 hectares, vegetable on 1025 hectares and Chilli on
28 hectares went under flood water in the district.

District primary Education Officer Md Shahidul Islam said 181 primary
schools have been shut due to flood in the district. Beside 73 high school
and Madrasa also were closed down as flood water entered those institutions.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Office sources said 290 metric tonnes
rice, Taka three lakh and 2000 packets dried food are being distributed among
the flood victims.

They said 13 flood shelters were also set up for flood-hit people.

Water Development Board (WDB) sources said the Jamuna river is flowing
by 119cm above its danger mark at Bahadurabad. Nearly 70,000 people have been
affected by the flood, they said adding more areas in the district will be
inundated, if rising trend of Jamuna river may continue.

Civil Surgeon of Jamalpur district hospital Dr Goutam Roy said 84
medical teams are working in the flood affected areas to provide primary
healthcare treatments.
