Flood situation deteriorates in Gaibandh as flood control dam collapsed

GAIBANDHA, JULY 15, 2019 (BSS) – Flood situation in Gaibandha district deteriorated further as the Brahmaputra and the Ghagot registered further rise in last 24 hours till 9 am due to rush of hilly waters from the upstream and incessant rain.

Fresh areas of the mainland of the district have also been flooded as the flood control embankments collapsed at four points of Sadar and Fulchhari upazilas this morning due to pressure of flood water of the Brahmaputra and the Ghagot river.

Two portions of flood control embankment at Baguria area under Sadar upazila and Katlamari area under Fulchhari upazila have been washed away this morning due to the pressure of the Brahmaputra river water.

Apart from this, two portions of flood control embankment at Kutharpara area and Godarhat area under Sadar upazila also collapsed due to the pressure of Ghagot river water this morning.

Due to the collapse of the embankments, flood water entered the houses of the mainland creating untold sufferings to the people.

Hundreds of flood victims have taken shelter on the embankments and higher places including flood shelter centres with livestock and other belongings.

NDC and acting district relief and rehabilitation officer M. Shaheedul Islam said as many as 2,54,066 people of the district got marooned.

Over 42,000 flood victims took shelters in 96 shelter centres so far, he added.

Executive engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board Mokhlasur Rahman said the Brahmaputra rose by 41 cm in last 24 hours and it was flowing 109 cm above danger mark at Fulchharighat point of the district.

The Ghagot marked by 22 cm during the period and it was flowing 68 cm above danger level at New Bridge Road point of the district town, he also said.

In reply to a query, executive engineer of BWDB admitted the collapse of flood control embankment at four points of the district today.

Acting deputy commissioner Rokhsana Begum said they were closely monitoring the flood situation and distributing relief materials to the flood and river erosion victims to mitigate their sufferings.
