Implementation of CEDAW convention suggested

RAJSHAHI, May 3, 2018 (BSS) – Full approval and implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) can be the vital means of freeing the women from all sorts of violence and disparities.

The view was expressed at a divisional workshop by hosts of discussants who urged the authorities concerned to devise ways and means to implement the CEDAW conventions as early as possible.

Step Towards Development (STD) organized the workshop titled “UN CEDAW Committee’s Closing Opinion 2016” in association with Barendra Unnayan Prochesta (BUP) at Parjatan conference hall in Rajshahi city today.

UN Women and Citizens’ Initiatives on CEDAW, Bangladesh supported the meeting. More than 80 persons including professional and political leaders, public representatives, students, members of the civil society, development activists and media people joined the meeting putting forward a set of recommendations on how to attain the cherished goal.

Akhter Jahan, MP, addressed the meeting as chief guest while UN Women Gi Country representative Shoko Ishikawa spoke as guest of honor.

During his keynote presentation, Ranjan Karmakar, Executive Director of STD, gave an overview of the issue and narrated the aspects of implementation of the CEDAW conventions.

Taking part in the discussion Fowzia Karim, Executive Chief of Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association, urged the government to take necessary measures immediately for approval and implementation of the CEDAW convention in the country. She added that quality and quantity representation of women in the policy making bodies is very important for women empowerment.

Deputy Director of Department of Social Services Rashedul Kabir, Executive Director of BUP Foyzullah Chowdhury, local unit president of Bangladesh Mohila Parishad, President of Committee of Concerned Citizens Prof Abdus Salam and Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat also spoke.

Lawmaker Akhter Jahan said the present government with dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly to ensure women rights side by side with empowering the women alongside boosting their social and family dignity.

She added the government’s various time-fitting programmes like formation of women development forum are very effective towards generating and enhancing political and social leadership among women which are the supplementing means of implementation of CEDAW convention.
