NILPHAMARI, July 12, 2019 (BSS) – Water level of the river Teesta at the Nilphamari point is flowing above its danger mark giving a signal to worsen the ongoing floods in the district.

Executive Engineer of Water Development Board Md Rabiul Islam told BSS that, “Water level at Dalia point of the river Teesta is flowing by 20cm above its danger mark. If water level in the Teesta continues to rise, flood situation may worsen in Nilphamarai district.”

According to representatives of local government bodies, onrush of water from upstream region and heavy rainfall triggered floods in 15 char areas under Nilphamari district leaving over 10,000 families marooned.

Due to rise of water level in the river Teesta in Dimla upazila of the district, nearly 1,000 families were affected.

Low-lying areas in the district were flooded as water levels in the major rivers rose sharply, Md Abdullah Al Mamun, executive engineer of Water Development Board of Nilphamari said.

Alongside taking initiatives to check damages of embankments, adequate relief materials have been kept ready to aid the flood victims.
