Dutch to help digitize retail payment system

DHAKA, July 10, 2019 (BSS) – Dutch Queen Maxima today proposed to digitize the retail payment system in Bangladesh and assured Dhaka of giving necessary assistance to this regard.

The proposal was made when she met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganobhaban this evening.

After the meeting, PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the media.

The Queen said that she visited 15 industries, e-commerce and i-pay in Bangladesh.

She appreciated the progress in this sector and the growth of mobile phone use and expressed her interest to support Bangladesh to this end.

Maxima highly praised the Prime Minister and her government as Bangladesh has witnessed huge development particularly in women empowerment under her dynamic leadership.

She evinced keen interest to work with Bangladesh in this regard, saying ‘We have to work together’.

In reply, the prime minister said, ‘Bangladesh is a densely populated country, so we need development.’

All our development works have started from the grassroots, she said, adding, ‘Our main focus is development of rural people and empowerment of women.’

‘The government has been encouraging digitisation. But, protection of the system is necessary,’ she added.

As many as 5174 digital centres have already been established to pursue the digitisation from where the women are going to get the service, the premier said.

‘We are now switching over to the digital system and it will be completed gradually,’ she said.

Some 2.03 crore students are getting stipends from the government, he informed.

The salaries of primary school teachers are being transferred using the digital system, she added.

PM’s ICT Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy said the people of Bangladesh are now getting smart phone at less than $ 150 each.

He also said the Electronic Know Your Customer -e-KYC was launched one week ago which facilitated to open bank account without paper based documents.

PM’s International Affairs Adviser, Gowher Rizvi, State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain, PM’s Principal Secretary M Nojibur Rahman and Ambassador of the Netherlands were also present on the occasion.
