Deal for MRT Agargaon-Motijheel section signed

DHAKA, April 30, 2018 (BSS) – Two separate agreements were signed at a city hotel for construction of the eight-kilometer elevated viaducts (tracks) and seven stations of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-6 from Agargaon to Motijheel.

Managing Director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) MAN Siddique and Tsuyoshi Nishimura of Japan’s construction firm Tekken Corporation as lead partner signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides. The other agreement was signed between Managing Director of DMTCL MAN Siddique and Ikuokitada of Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co. Ltd.

The cost of the two agreements is Taka 4,200 crore.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader was present as chief guest at the signing ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion he said the construction work of the Agargaon- Motijheel section of the country’s first ever metro rail would begin soon.

Among others, chairman of the standing committee on Road Transport and Bridge Ministry AKM Ekabbar Hossain, Member Nazmul Haque Prodhan, Road Transport Division Secretary M Nazrul Islam, Chief Engineer of Roads and Highways Department Ibne Alam Hassan and senior officials concerned were present.

According to the project details, around 20-kilometer of MRT line-6 is being implemented in eight packages. Under the third and fourth package, construction of nine kilometer viaduct and nine stations from Uttara North to Agargaon is going on in full swing.

Under the fifth package, construction of three kilometer viaduct and three stations from Agargaon to Karwan Bazar would be constructed, while five kilometer viaduct and four stations from Karwan Bazar to Motijheel will be constructed under the sixth package.

The details said that 14 trains would operate every three minutes and carry 60,000 passengers every hour in both directions. The 20-km metro rail will have a total of 16 stations through Uttara, Mirpur, Rokeya Sarani, Khamarbari, Farmgate, Sonargaon Hotel, Shahbagh, Doel Chattar and Topkhana road.

Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched the construction work of the metro rail project, also known as the MRT Line-6, on June 24, 2016.
