Soumya couldn’t follow tips that I gave him: Wasim Jaffer

DHAKA, July 10, 2019 (BSS) – Bangladesh High Performance (HP) unit’s
batting consultant Wasim Jaffer expressed his disappointment over Soumya
Sarkar’s form in the ICC Cricket World Cup in which the batsman returned with
just 166 runs in eight games even though he was expected to score heavily.

Soumya was in sensational form before the World Cup, hitting consecutive
century and double century in the domestic cricket for Abahani Limited,
ending his year-long poor form.

Wasim Jaffer, the former Indian opener, who played along with him in
Abahani was credited for his tremendous turnaround just before the World Cup.
Jaffer, who has almost 20,000 runs under his belt in first class cricket,
gave him some valuable tips and time during his net session.

Soumya then scored a century in the following days and later he struck a
first List A double century by a Bangladeshi batsman.

But he simply couldn’t carry on the form in the World Cup even though he
got start in some matches. It was the fact that disappointed Jaffer more.

According to Jaffer, Soumya couldn’t stick to the tips he gave him and
instead he got back to his old game, which was the reason behind his
downfall.

“I have seen his batting. I was little disappointed. Cause the things that
I have spoken to him before, he hasn’t followed that. He returned to his own
style,” Jaffer said here today.

“That is bit surprising because when I saw him here, he was playing the
way I had told him. But suddenly he has gone back to his old game. So, I
haven’t got a chance to speak to him. So, when I see him, obviously I will
speak to him.”

In the last edition of the Bangladesh Premier League, Soumya was even
dropped by Rajshahi Kings after managing just 35 runs in 5 games. He then
scored an impressive century in the Hamilton Test against New Zealand but had
managed just 52 runs in the preceding three-match ODI series.

He lost his confidence too and continued to score poor runs in Dhaka
Premier League, before Jaffer came up as rescuer for him.

“It’s a few technical things. And obviously it’s a mental thing also. You
can’t say every time that it’s a technical thing cause in international
cricket, its more mental than technical. So, whenever I get a chance to work
with him or even other players I share what I think,” Jaffer said.

“He is a very free flowing player. And you need to promote him or
encourage him to play like that you know. Because, that’s his game. You don’t
want to discourage a player who scores very quickly. But he just needs to
understand the time he needs to play certain shots.”

“I mean the more he plays, the more he uses his head, he will get better.
Because he got talent in him. No doubt,” he added.
