COX’S BAZAR, April 29, 2018 (BSS) – Visiting high level UN Security Council (UNSC) team today observed that the Rohingya crisis came from Myanmar and vowed that they will work sincerely for a quick solution.

They acknowledged that the Rohingya issue is a crisis of Myanmar and the solution lies there as well.

Though they ruled out any possibility of imposing sanction on Myanmar right now, they vowed to be remaining beside Dhaka to resolve the issue admitting that the crisis was imposed on Bangladesh shoulder.

“Our fellow team members are ready to work hard and very concerned about the crisis,” delegation leader the current President of UNSC, Gustavo Adolfo Meza Cuadra Velasqez told reporters after talking with Rohingyas at their camp here.

“I think, we’ve witnessed the magnitude of the Rohingya crisis and very tragic situation of some of the families,” said Gustav, who is also Peru’s Ambassador to the UN.

Prior to the briefing, the delegation visited Tombru border in Bandarban’s Naikhyangchhari and Kutupalong camp here to witness the plight of the rohingya there.

This is the first UN Security Council delegation to visit the camps since Bangladesh experienced a massive influx of Rohingya last August.

One of the members of the UNSC team, United Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Karen Pierce said the UNSC is going to work hard to help Bangladesh and Myanmar resolve this crisis. “The problem there lies in their (Rohingya) expulsion, treatment and the fact that they had to flee to Bangladesh,” she said.

The delegation members lauded the Bangladesh role in tackling the Rohinguyas even after not being a party of this crisis.

They laid emphasis on safe return of Rohingyas from Bangladesh to Myanmar and said that they will off to Myanmar right away from Dhaka to talk with Myanmar authority for resolving the crisis.

Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam, who is accompanying the high-level delegation, said Bangladesh hoped that the UNSC will play positive role to solve the crisis especially after this visit.

“They (UNSC team) are touched by the stories of Rohingyas and realized that the root cause of Rohingya crisis lies in Myanmar,” he said.

The state minister also said the UNSC team highly appreciated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government’s efforts in this crisis situation.

The 15-member UNSC delegation includes the representatives of five permanent members of the Security Council like – the USA, Russia, France, the UK and China. The other members include permanent representatives from Bolivia, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Netherlands, Peru, Poland and Sweden and deputy permanent representative from Ivory Coast.

The UNSC team will pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina tomorrow morning before leaving for Myanmar for a two-day visit to discuss on the Rohingya issues with Myanmar authorities.
