SANGSAD BHABAN, July 8, 2019 (BSS) – State Minister for Labour and
Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian today told the parliament that the
government is working to formulate an employment policy aiming to create more
employment opportunities in the country.
“The Labour and Employment Ministry is working to formulate an employment
policy to take a planned programme aiming to create more employment
opportunities in Bangladesh,” she said while replying to a starred question
placed by ruling party lawmaker Habiba Rahman Khan (women seat-17).
The state minister said the Awami League government is sincerely working
to reduce unemployment by creating more employment opportunities for people
in the country.
As per the seven six-year plan (2016-20), she said, the government has
taken various initiatives to create the country’s youths as skilled manpower.
Noting that the number of workable youths is increasing in the country
gradually, Monnujan said about 58 percent people of the country’s total
population is workable, who are above 15 years.
She said the government will create 12.9 million additional employment
opportunities by 2020.
Citing the figures of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, the state minister
said about 4.78 crore people were involved in different works in fiscal 2005-
06 and the number increased to 6.08 crore in fiscal 2016-17.
About two crore people got new employments during the period, she added.
