Boro harvest begins in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, April 26, 2018 (BSS) – Harvesting of Boro paddy, one of the high value crops, has begun in the district during the current Boro season with much enthusiasm and festivity to the farmers.

A field day organized by Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) was also held at Thakurer Dighi area under Kholahati union of Sadar upazila here on Wednesday with deputy director of DAE AKM Ruhul Amin in the chair.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Gautam Chandra Pal formally inaugurated the harvesting programme as chief guest and organizing secretary of district Awami League Mridul Mostafi Jhantu and president of upazila Awami League Rezaul Karim Reza were present as the special guests.

Speaking on the occasion DC Gautam Chandra Pal urged the farmers to cultivate high yielding variety of Boro paddy to get desired output against the crop to achieve country’s food security.

The DC also asked the agriculture officials particularly sub assistant agriculture officials (SAAOs) to give advices to the farmers about the latest agri-technologies to boost production of crops.

Later, a paddy cutting competition was also held in the crop filed where a good number of farmers participated with festive mood and the guests distributed prizes to the winners.

Farmer Shahin Miah, owner of the land, expressed their deep satisfaction over the production as he had got 20 maunds of paddy from a bigha of land.

Upazila agriculture officer Sadiqul Islam, union Awami League president Mahmdud Sarwar Mukta, SAAOs Farhana Sanzida, Mokbul Hossain, and Abdur Rab, and local elite including journalists attended the function.

Talking to the BSS DD of DAE AKM Ruhul Amin said the department set a target to farm Boro paddy on 1,27,900 hectares of land this year with the production target of 3,35,000 tonnes of rice.

Later, the target fixed by the department exceeded and more 2770 hectares of land were brought under the Boro farming, the DD concluded.
