President urges all to contribute to nation-building

 SAVAR, April 25, 2018 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid, who has begun his office of the Presidency for the second consecutive time, today urged all people irrespective of party affiliations to contribute towards the nation- building from their respective positions.

“Do come ….. Contribute to the nation-building irrespective of party affiliations,” the President made the call while penning a remark on the visitors’ book kept at the National Martyrs Memorial in Savar after paying rich tributes to war martyrs this afternoon, a day after he took oath of the country’s highest office.

President Hamid said Bangabandhu’s daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working relentlessly to materialize the dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who wanted to turn the country into a “Sonar Bangla”.

In the visitors’ book, the President wrote, “We can pay due respect and honour to the freedom fighters by building a happy and prosperous country.”

He recalled the contribution of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu as the architect of country’s Independence with deep respect.

President Hamid also paid homage to freedom fighters, organisers of the Liberation War and people of all classes for their outstanding contributions to achieve freedom.

A veteran politician and parliamentarian, Abdul Hamid last evening took oath as the head of state for the second consecutive term at a ceremony at Bangabhaban.

He appeared as the country’s 21st President, 77 days after the Election Commission declared him elected to the presidency unopposed for the highest office.

Abdul Hamid was elected to the Member of Parliament (MP) for seven times since the 1971 independence.

According to the section 7 of President Law 1991, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Nurul Huda, also returning officer of the presidential election, on February 7 declared Abdul Hamid as the 21st President of Bangladesh as no other candidate contended for the post.

Former Parliament Speaker Hamid was the lone candidate for the post of presidency being the nominee of the ruling Awami League in 2014 while 16 persons held the position previously for 19 terms. Abdul Hamid is the 17th person to serve as the President.
