Rana Plaza collapse victims get Taka 261.88 cr aid

DHAKA, April 24, 2018 (BSS) – A total of 6,325 victims of Rana Plaza collapse on the city’s outskirt Savar, that claimed over 1100 lives in 2013, have received Taka 261.88 crore aid so far.

Of the assistance, Taka 23.48 crore came from Prime Minister’s Relief and Welfare Fund while International Labour Organization (ILO) and trust fund Primark donated around Taka 275 crore, according to Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Ministry’s Deputy Secretary Khondker Mostan Hossain told BSS that the government has taken different initiatives to provide long-term assistance to all family members of the dead and wounded workers.

Prime Minister’s Relief Fund, Labour and Employment Ministry, district administration, ILO, Primark and different foreign organizations provided assistances to the victims, he said.

Hossain said the government ensured safety and security of garment industries and it took initiatives to ensure social and financial safety as well.

Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS) Executive Director Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed said a total of 1135 bodies of laborers were recovered from the wreckage Rana Plaza while around 2500 persons were rescued as wounded.

Many of the injured became paralyzed while some others have been suffering from mental disorders after being traumatized in the collapse, he added.

Under the initiative of the government and non-government organization, a trust fund was formed to provide treatment to those victims.

Ahmed said 435 persons among the wounded were imparted training to enhance their skills while 135 trained persons have got Taka 40,000 capital each to be self-reliant. More 145 persons got Taka 50000 capital each in second phase, he added.

At least 1,136 people, mostly garment workers, were killed and over 2,500 injured in the building collapse on April 24, 2013.
