Drive against river encroachment will be continued: Khalid
DHAKA, June 23, 2019 (BSS) – State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury today said the drive against river enthronement would be continued until the four rivers surrounding the capital Dhaka are freed.
“No mercy will be shown against river encroachers. Steps will also be taken against those will obstruct the drives against encroachment,” he said while inaugurating waste removal activities at the riverbanks of Turag at Abdullahpur in the city.
He said: “We cannot show our different historical establishments to foreigners due to pollution of the river Buriganga.”
Khalid said walkway, border pillar, eco-park will be established on the banks of rivers surrounding Dhaka city for beatification.
He said the government has a plan to retrieve the previous beautiful look of river Buriganga within 10 years.
Former Home Minister Shahara Khatun, Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation Jahangir Alam, Secretary of Shipping Ministry Md. Abdus Samad, journalist and columnist Syed Abul Maksud addressed the function with Chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Commodore M Mahbub Ul Islam in the chair.
