Shakib’s streak of 50-plus knock finally comes to end

DHAKA, June 20, 2019 (BSS)-Australia finally became the team to stop Shakib Al Hasan before he reached 50-plus mark in this World Cup yet again. And thereby they ended his four-match fifty-plus knock streak, denying him to emulate their very own Steve Smith’s record.

Steve Smith so stands atop solely on the unique list with five straight fifty plus scores (in 2015 World Cup) at the start of the campaign.

Australian fast bowling all-rounder Marcus Stoinis was the lucky man to have done it when he dismissed Shakib for run-a-ball 41. Before this match, Shakib’s score read 75 against South Africa, 64 against New Zealand, 121 against England and 124 not out against West Indies in this World Cup. And thus also his five-match 50 plus knock streak came to an end.

Before making four fifty plus score in World Cup, he had also a knock of 50 not out against Ireland in a tri-series tournament. The talismanic all-rounder missed the tri-series final due to his injury, in which Bangladesh became unbeaten champions.

His 124 runs knock that came off just 99 deliveries in winning-cause against West Indies, was his fourth fifty plus knock at the start of World Cup, which was also his fifth successive ODI fifty plus knock put him alongside Sachin Tendulkar who also had those two records.

Apart from Sachin and Shakib, Navjot Singh Sidhu (1987 World Cup) and South Africa’s former skipper Graeme Smith (2007 World Cup) also had four fifty plus knock at the start of the campaign.

While the five consecutive fifty plus knock also included a total of 32 batsmen including Tendulkar and Shakib. Virat Kohli is the only batsman in the list to have achieved the milestone twice.

However, Shakib isn’t the first Bangladeshi on that list as opener Tamim Iqbal was the first and only other from the nation who had achieved the feat back in 2012.
