Tobacco kills 441 people everyday in Bangladesh

RANGPUR, June 20, 2019 (BSS) – Some 441 people are embracing death daily due to tobacco-related diseases in Bangladesh, causing a growing threat to public health.

It was told at a discussion held at conference room of the Civil Surgeon here in observance of the World No Tobacco Day-2019.

The district and health administrations in cooperation with the Association of Community Development (ACD) and organised the program.

On the occasion a rally was brought out in the city. Civil Surgeon Dr. Abu Md. Zakirul Islam, Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr. Kaniz Sabiha, Medical Officer Dr. Irfan Ali, District Sanitary Inspector Mahbubur Rahman spoke on the occasion while advocacy officer of ACD Shariful Islam Shamim presented keynote paper.

A total of 1.61-lakh people are dying annually in Bangladesh from tobacco related diseases with 441 persons a day creating a threat to public health, Shamim said quoting latest survey reports.

Speakers put importance on imposing ban on tobacco cultivation, strict enforcement of the amended Tobacco Control Act (TCA) and Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act for saving public health.
