CHAPAINAWABGANJ, June 20, 2019 (BSS) – Nine people were sentenced to death and two to life term imprisonment for murdering Monirul Islam, treasurer of Sonamasjid Land Port Clearing and Forwarding Agents Association.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Md. Shawkat Ali pronounced the verdict today acquitting four others as the charge brought against them was not proved.
The convicts who got death penalty are – Akherul Islam, 36, Sirajul Islam Munshi, 40, Tahurul Islam Tutul, 42, Abdul Malek, 34, Sirajul Islam, 40, Shariful Islam Sharif, 37, Md. Masud, 22, Sirajul Islam Sentu, 32, and Abdus Salam, 34.
Parul Begum and Masud alias Lalchand, who remained absconding, were given life term imprisonment.
The court fined them Taka 2 lakh on each or to suffer another one year in default.
According to the prosecution, the then president of the Sonamasjid Land port C&F Agents Association Akherul, vice-president Munshi, general secretary Tutul and others were had an dispute with Monirul over transaction of the association’s money.
The convicts took Monirul to Shibganj Upazila Stadium area in the evening of October 24, 2014 and shot him dead.
Monirul’s wife Rahima Khatun filed a murder case with Shibganj police station next day.
Assistant superintendent of police of Chapainawabganj Sadar circle and investigating officer of the case Matiur Rahman Siddiqui submitted charge sheet accusing 15 people on June 15, 2015.
After hearing 23 witnesses the court handed down the verdict.
