RAJSHAHI, June 19, 2019 (BSS) – Speakers at a seminar here today laid importance on climate smart agricultural practice through using substantial use of organic fertilizers in the farming fields for better productivity.

“Substantial and sustainable use of required organic fertilizers in the farming fields is very important for boosting soil health and agricultural productivity,” they said.

Plant and animal wastes based fertilizer has a vital role towards protecting the soil nutrients which are being declined due to various natural and manmade catastrophes. So, there is no alternative to protect the soil nutrients from further declining trend amidst the adverse impact of climate change, they said.

Soil Resource Development Institution (SRDI) in association with Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council organized the seminar on “Climate Smart Agricultural Practice by Adding Organic Matter and Lime for Sustainable Crop Productivity in Barind Soil” at conference hall of Agriculture Information Service.

Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension Shamsul Haque attended the seminar as chief guest while SRDI Principal Scientific Officer Dr Afsar Ali was in the chair.

In the keynote paper of the seminar SRDI Senior Scientific Officer Dr Nurul Islam said climate change may affect soil health through lowering soil organic matters like nitrogen and phosphorus levels, decreasing soil moisture holding capacity, disturbing soil pH balance and affective soil calcium carbonate.

Organic matter supplies plant nutrients, increase water holding capacity of soil and reduce residual negative effect of fertilizers and pesticides, he said.
