Food inflation eases in May

DHAKA, June 18, 2019 (BSS) – Food inflation in May eased to 5.49 percent from 5.54 percent in April this fiscal, according to latest data of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

Food inflation in rural areas also declined to 5.67 percent in May from 5.68 percent in April, while it stood at 5.9 percent in urban areas down from 5.22 percent.

Planning Minister M A Mannan released the monthly CPI index today at a briefing after a meeting of ECNEC at NEC Conference Room in city’s Sher-e-Banglanagar.

The BBS data, however, showed the overall inflation increased slightly to 5.63 percent in May against 5.58 percent in the previous month.

In rural areas, the inflation stood at 5.44 percent, up from 5.41 percent, while it was 5.96 percent, up from 5.89 percent in urban areas.

Planning division secretary Nurul Amin and statistics and informatics division secretary Saurendra Nath Chakrabhartty were present.
