RAJSHAHI, April 18, 2018 (BSS) – Speakers at a discussion here observed creating mass-awareness coupled with a changed social mindset could be the effective means of preventing all sorts of violence and repressions against women.

They viewed all of us should raise voice and work together to address the social problem collectively as only the government or any other single organization cannot bring any positive result in this regard.

The observation came at a daylong orientation with leaders of influence at Durgapur Upazila Parishad hall room in the district on Tuesday.

District Information Office and Upazila administration jointly organized the meeting in association with Awareness Communication for Women and Child Development Programme.

Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi division Aminul Islam addressed the meeting as chief guest with Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Anwar Sadat in the chair.

Deputy Director of Divisional Directorate of Health Dr Gopendra Nath Achariya, Upazila Chairman Nazrul Islam, Vice-chairman Banesha Begum, Deputy Director of Department of Information Md Shamsuzzaman and Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat also spoke.

The discussants said more community participation is needed to build a society free from child marriage as it’s a precondition to end violence against women and along with improving their living and livelihood condition.

They viewed flourishing their latent talents together with building them as educated could be the vital means of founding Bangladesh as a dignified nation in near future.

Aminul Islam said responsive support from the community, especially teachers, parents and leaders of influence has become a must for reducing child marriage substantially and sustainably.

He said eradicating child marriage is imperative in creating a glorious Bangladesh and building a social resistance against child marriage is important.

There is no alternative to creating community awareness through raising school-based awareness on adolescence for combating the existing rate of child marriage.

The practice of child marriage is very damaging, especially for girls. It seems that girls are treated as burden to society, mostly in rural areas, he added.

Collective efforts to end all sorts of disparity and violence against women especially girls is very important to address the odd situation. Aminul Islam, however, said the present government has been working relentlessly to this end.
