Ruman Sana lauded for qualifying for Tokyo Olympic

DHAKA, June 16, 2019 (BSS) – Bangladesh Archery Federation pledged to help Ruman Sana take good preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic by sending him in various tournaments in abroad.

Ruman Sana is the second Bangladeshi athlete to qualify the Olympics directly after ace golfer Siddikur Rahman who earned the Olympic quota for the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Sana earned his quota despite losing his semifinal clash to his Malaysian counterpart Khairul Anuar Mohamad by 3-7 set points of Hyundai World Archery Championship-2019 held on Thursday in the Netherlands.

On the way to the semifinals of recurve men’s singles, Roman Sana put up an impressive performance in the pre-quarterfinals and quarterfinal as he beat Sjef Van Den Berg of Netherland by 6-2 set points in the quarterfinal match before beating gold medalist of 2011 World Archery Championships, Kim Woojin of South Korea, by 6-4 set points in the pre quarterfinal.

However when Archery Federation was recognizing his success in a press conference, Sana was fighting for the bronze medal against Mauro Nespoli in the recurve men’s singles event on Sunday (June 16).

“Ruman Sana will train under the guidance of Martin, who is a high profile coach. But we’ll send him to take part in various tournament in abroad to help him take a good preparation for the Olympics,” said Archery Federation general secretary Kazi Rajib Uddin Ahmed Chapol in a press conference held at the auditorium of Bangladesh Olympic Association on Sunday.

“Hopefully he will bring something for us from the Tokyo Olympic.”

Chapol dedicates Sana’s success to the countrymen, saying, “He makes us immensely proud. Three archers from India get them qualified for the Tokyo Olympic directly while Ruman Sana is from Bangladesh. We dedicate his immense success for our countrymen.”

Syed Shahed Reza, the Secretary General of Bangladesh Olympic Association, Archery federation President Lt. Gen. (retd) Moinul Islam, Archery’s sponsor Teer’s brand manager Rubaiyat Hossain all spoke on the occasion.

“We’ll make a country-wide campaign to recognize the success of Ruman Sana with a program titled “We need to Hero’,” said Rubaiyat Hossain.

Teer has immense contribution in making the Archery Federation a successful organization since its inception in 2003. Bangladesh archer Imdadul Haque Milon earlier qualified to play the Youth Olympic Games in 2009.

In recurve’s team event, Bangladesh also have the chance to make direct qualify but the team consisted of Ruman Sana, Hakim Ahmed Rubel, Tamimul Islam lost to Korea to squander the chance.

“It’s a matter of pride for us that Ruman Sana is the second Bangladeshi athlete to play the Olympics directly after Siddkur Rahman. I hope other federations will be inspired by the success of archery and would also show their mettle,” said BOA secretary general Syed Shahed Reza.

President and general secretary of Archery thanked Teer, a sister concern of City Group to stand by them.
