3 killed, 20 injured in Tongi train accident

 DHAKA, April 15, 2018 (BSS) – At least three people were killed and 20 others injured as a commuter train derailed in Tongi of Gazipur district today.

The details about the deceased passengers could not be known immediately.

Confirming the incident, Station Officer of Tongi Fire Service Md Atikur Rahman said, five bogies of a Dhaka-bound ‘Commuter Train’ from Jamalpur veered off the rail track in Notun Bazar area of Tongi, leaving three passengers, who were travelling on its roof, dead on the spot and 20 others injured.

The injured were sent to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital (SAUMGH), Tongi.

Of the wounded people, five were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition, a resident physician of the SAUMGH Dr Md Parvez Hossain said.

Rail communication of Dhaka with rest parts of the country has remained suspended following the accident, Tongi Railway Station Government Railway Police (GRP) Assistant Sub-Inspector Md Delwar Hossain told BSS.

Meanwhile, Railways Minister Mujibul Haque visited the spot.
