BARI-evolved pumpkin, gourd farming profitable: Experts

 RANGPUR, April 12, 2018 (BSS) – Experts at a farmers’ field day function have stressed expanded cultivation of high yielding variety pumpkin and gourd vegetables evolved by Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) to earn high profits.

They laid importance on adopting the latest technologies for production; preservation and utilisation of quality breeder seeds of the cucurbit group vegetables like BARI Pumpkin-2 and BARI Bottle Gourd-4 to increase production.

The Regional Agriculture Research Station (RARS) of BARI organised the farmers’ field day event at its Burirhat Farm in the city on Wednesday afternoon, a press release said today.

Over 100 farmers attended the event to acquire practical knowledge on production, preservation and utilisation of breeder seeds of BARI evolved pumpkin, gourds and other vegetables with farming technologies.

Chief Scientific Officer of RARS of BARI Md Rais Uddin Chowdhury attended the event as the chief guest with its Principal Scientific Officer Dr Md Badruzzaman in the chair.

Senior scientific officer of BARI Dr Md Obaidul Haque said, “A farmer can get eight to nine pieces of BARI Pumpkin-2 and BARI Bottle Gourd-4 each weighing 2.50 kilogram on an average to earn up to Taka 25,000 from each bigha of land.”

“The BARI Pumpkin-2 and BARI Bottle Gourd-4 are highly nutritious, sweetness of BARI Pumpkin-2 is 10-11 percent and the farmers can produce 25 to 30 tonnes of these vegetables per hectare to earn huge profits,” he said.

The chief guest called for adopting the latest technologies to produce quality breeder seeds of BARI Pumpkin-2 and BARI Bottle Gourd-4 and cultivate those ensuring proper agronomical managements for getting maximum output and profits.
