Record attendance as Scotland get winning World Cup send-off

LONDON, May 29, 2019 (BSS/AFP) – Scotland ended their preparations for this year’s Women’s World Cup with a 3-2 victory over Jamaica in front of a record crowd at Hampden Park on Tuesday.

The 18,555 fans present in Glasgow beat the previous best by more than 14,000 for Shelley Kerr’s side who head to the competition for the first time in their history.

The visitors’ Khadja Shaw opened the scoring to stun the home crowd after a quarter of an hour.

Chelsea’s Erin Cuthbert responded 15 minutes later to equalise with a powerful effort from outside the box.

The Scots went ahead on 35 minutes as Manchester City midfielder Caroline Weir bent a free-kick into the top corner.

Recent University of Tennessee graduate Shaw, 22, brought the teams back level on the 50-minute mark smoothly chipping Lee Alexander in the Scottish goal.

German-born Reading defender Sophie Howard made sure the raucous Glaswegian supporters went home happy with 22 minutes to play.

Howard found space in the box and headed home a Weir corner.

Scotland face rivals England, former winners Japan as well as Argentina in their group matches which start on June 9 two days after France open the tournament against South Korea.

The Reggae Girlz, the lowest ranked side in the competition play Brazil, Australia and Italy in the pool stages.
