Govt to announce policy for informal industries sector soon

Dhaka, May 27, 2019 (BSS) – The Industries Ministry will formulate a
policy for informal industries sector soon aiming to ensure sustainable
growth in the sector and increase its contribution to the national economy.

The officials of the ministry revealed the information at a workshop
titled ‘Drafting Policy Guideline for the Informal Sector Industries’ here
today.

The Informal Sector Industry Skills Council (ISISC), formed under the
National Skills Development Authority (NSDA), arranged the workshop at Hotel
Purbani, an official release said.

Chaired by additional secretary of the ministry Begum Parag, the workshop
was addressed, among others, by Industries secretary Md Abdul Halim, NSDA
executive chairman Md Faruque Hossain, ILO Bangladesh representative Toumo
Poutiainen and ISISC chairman Mirza Nurul Gani.

ISISC consultant Suresh Chandra Das read out a keynote paper at the
workshop.

The officials said the Informal Sector Industry Skills Council (ISISC) is
working to prepare a draft of the proposed informal industries policy and it
will finalise the policy within June this year and send it to the Industries
Ministry.

About 87 percent of the country’s total workforce is working in the
informal industries sector, they said, adding that around 20 lakh people join
the labour market in the country every year, and of them, about 80 percent
work in informal industries sector.

The speakers said although workers and entrepreneurs in the informal
industries sector face various hurdles, those were not considered in the
National Industrial Policy.
