DHAKA, May 22, 2019 (BSS) – Visiting Canadian parliament member Kamal Khera
today said Canada remains engaged with international community for bringing
Rohingya issue to international courts as it is giving top priority to ensure
Myanmar’s accountability over the issue.
“Accountability to the Myanmar government over Rohingya is the top
priority for Canada,” she told reporters after holding meetings with State
Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam at the foreign ministry here.
Khera, who is also Parliamentary Secretary to the Canadian International
Development minister, announced that her government will provide 100 million
dollars more as humanitarian assistance for the people of Cox’s Bazar
district.
The fund includes 68 million dollars as development assistance to increase
access to quality health and gender equitable basic education services for
both the Rohingya and local communities.
She said Canada has always been remain in forefront to address the
Rohingya crisis from the beginning and termed the atrocity as an ethnic
cleansing and genocide.
“We are the first one that revoked citizenship of Aung San Suu Kyi and
also put injunction against Myanmar,” she added.
Khera said Canada remains engaged with the international community to find
out a tangible solution to the Rohingya crisis.
Apart from the Rohingya issue, the state minister said during the meeting
they discussed various issues related to bilateral matters and trade and
commerce cooperation between Bangladesh and Canada.
He said they discussed how both the countries can be benefited utilizing
potential of Bangladesh Diaspora community living in Canada.
“Canada realizes that Bangladesh is transforming into trade phase from aid
stage and they are keen to increase commerce relations with Dhaka,” he added
Alam welcomed the Canadian humanitarian and political support to Bangladesh
in resolving the Rohingya crisis.
Khera arrived here on May 20th and visited several Rohingya camps in Cox’s
Bazar.
