Govt allocates 128 tonnes rice for flood victims

SYLHET, July 4, 2017 (BSS) – With a view to mitigating woes of the flood-
affected people in six upazilas of the district, the government has allocated
128 tonnes of rice and cash support of over Taka 2.77 lakh.

The district administration has already taken necessary steps to lessen the
sufferings of the flood victims, said Deputy Commissioner

Rahat Anwar, adding that a shelter home was open at each upazila as flood
situation has deteriorated due to heavy rain as well as onrush water from the
upstream.

Water level in Surma and Kushiyara rivers are flowing above danger level
resulting the flood at all the upzilas-Beanibazar, Golapganj, Fenchuganj,
Osmaninagar, Jakiganj and Balaganj, said Executive Engineer of Water
Development Board Sirajul Islam.

Crops on about 3,000 hectares of land were washed away by the floodwater,
said district administration sources.

The flood water has marooned one lakh people and the district
administration shutdown 161 primary schools and 13 higher secondary schools.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Awami League yesterday distributed relief among the
flood affected people in Fenchuganj and Balaganj upazilas.
