President visits Padma Bridge project sites

MUNSHIGANJ, April 02, 2018 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid today visited the Padma Multipurpose Bridge project sites in Munshiganj and Shariatpur areas, expressing his satisfaction over the progress of the construction work of the mega project.

The President, who is on a two-day visit to Padma Bridge Project sites, arrived at the Padma Bridge Service Area-1 in Mawa part of Munshignaj this afternoon, where he was apprised of the different activities of this mega project fully financed by the present government.

Abdul Hamid visited different areas of the project, including Chino-Hidro Majhikandi, Mawato Kathalbari, Padma Badge Span at Jajira point and bridge construction site.

He along with his entourage members also undertook a boat-ride to witness the pillars of the bridge and scenic beauty of the mighty Padma.

Senior Secretary of Bridges Division of the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry Khandker Anwarul Islam briefed the President who expressed his satisfaction over the progress as 53 percent work of the much-awaited mega bridge ended till end of March this year.

“I’m really satisfied seeing the progress of the construction work of the bridge here,” he told the officials familiar with the construction process.

Thanking all concerned, the President said emotion, dream and potentials of the people are closely linked with the much-awaited multi-purpose bridge as it would add a new dimension to country’s economy, culture, communication and social sectors.

He went on saying “Specially the import and export income would increase tremendously through Mongla and Pyara seaports in this region,”.

It (bridge) would also facilitate regional trade, promote industrial and commercial activities and increase economic and employment opportunities, Abdul Hamid added.

According to the bridge project, a total 41 spans will be set up on the bridge and 3.5 kilometre viaduct would be constructed in the 6.15km-long bridge between Mawa of Munshiganj and Jajira of Shariatpur.

The President said if the bridge is constructed, it would help materialize the dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to build hunger and poverty-free “Sonar Bangla” as well as implement the “Vision 2021” designed by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Sagufta Yasmin Emily, MP, Mrinal Kanti Das, MP, B.M. Muzammel Haque, MP, Awami League Organising Secretary AKM Enamul Haque Shamim and senior civil and military officials accompanied the President.

The President will return Dhaka tomorrow afternoon.
