Why Chuadanga victims won’t be given Taka 1cr each for losing eyesight: HC

 DHAKA, April 1, 2018 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today issued a rule asking officials concerned to explain in two weeks as to why 20 people, who recently lost eyesight after surgery at a health camp in Chuadanga, shall not be given Taka one crore each as compensation.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Md. Iqbal Kabir passed the order after holding hearing on a writ petition filed in this regard.

The court asked 10 officials including health secretary, home secretary, director general of Directorate General of Health Services, Chuadanga civil surgeon, deputy commissioner and superintendant of police to reply to the rule within two weeks. The court set May 6 for holding hearing on the matter.

“Apart from giving compensation, the court asked for explanations as to why punishment shall not be given to people responsible for those botched surgeries,” Amit Das Gupta, who filed and stood for the plea before court, told newsmen.

Many people from different areas of Chuadanga went for cataract surgery at an eye camp organized at Impact Masudul Haque Memorial Community Health Centre on March 5.

But twenty of them fell sick caused by eye infection following the surgery, Later, they were brought to capital, where doctors had to remove one eye of each of the 20 victims to save at least the other one.
