Hasan urges ulema to work against militancy

DHAKA, May 13, 2019 (BSS) – Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today urged the Islamic scholars to play a vital role to prevent terrorism and militancy from the country.

“Today, a number of people is giving militant training in the name of Islam and defaming the peaceful religion. You (ulema-mashayekh) should be aware about this so that none could use the name of Islam to carry out militant activities in the country,” he said while addressing an iftar mahfil at a hotel in the city.

Bangladesh Islami Front (BIF) hosted the iftar party in honor of political leaders of different parties and diplomats of different countries.

Chaired by BIF Chairman Maulana MA Mannan, the function was addressed, among others, by its Secretary General Maulana MA Mati and Presidium Member Maulana Sirajul Islam Chowdhury Harun and incumbent chief of Maizbhandar Darbar Shah Sufi Syed Saifuddin Ahmed.

Referring to terrorist attacks at mosques in Christchurch in New Zealand, Dr Hasan said militants have no religion and party rather they are enemy of the humanity.

Noting that Bangladesh has emerged as a role model for development in the world under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the minister said, “Along with the country’s economic development, the government is also working for the development of Islam and ulema (Islamic scholars)”.

The government is constructing Islamic cultural centres in districts and upazila towns across the country for the development of Islam while maqtab (religious education centers) have already been set up at over 70,000 mosques across the country.
