21th death anniversary of Shawkat Osman tomorrow

DHAKA, May 13, 2019 (BSS) – The 21st death anniversary of eminent litterateur of the Bangla literature Shawkat Osman will be observed tomorrow.

Shawkat was born in 2nd January in 1917 in Hugli of West Bangal in India. His real name was Ajijur Rahman. From his student life he was written about anti British rule, Bengali nationalism, culture and literature.

He had completed his post-graduation in Bengali literature from Calcutta University. Osman started his professional career as a teacher by joining Chittagong Commerce College in 1947 and then he joined Dhaka College and voluntarily retired in 1972 from there. He also worked as a journalist for a short period of time.

In his writings our liberation war got new dimensions. His noble ‘Janani’ was translated into English and has been acclaimed in many countries.

He also wrote short stories, poems, plays and essays. He also translated a large number of novels, short stories and plays into Bangla. Of some of his translated books include Nisho, Luknitshi, Bagdader Kabi, Time Machine, Panchti Kahini, Spainer Chhotogalpa, Panchti Natak, Daktar Abdullahar Karkhana, Prithibir Rangamanche Manus, and Santaner Shikarokti.

He received many awards including- Bangla Academy Literature Award, Ekushey Padak, Independence Day Award, Adamjee Literature Award, Muktodhara Literature Award.

Eminent writer Shawkat Osman passed away in Dhaka on May 14 in 1998.
