World Red Cross, Red Crescent Day observed

DHAKA, May 8, 2019 (BSS) – The World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day was
observed today in the country like elsewhere in the world through various
programmes.

Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and other organisations took different
programmes, marking the day.

Discussion, award distribution ceremony, painting competition, arts
exhibition and blood donation camp were arranged in the capital.

President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate
messages on the occasion of the day. The theme of day this year is ‘Love’.

Former chairman of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Sheikh Kabir Hossain
was conferred with ‘Red Crescent Award’ this year for his contribution to
human welfare.

Bangladesh Red Crescent Society started its programme by hoisting national
flag and its flag at its headquarters in the capital this morning.

Marking the day, a discussion and award distribution ceremony were
arranged at the auditorium of Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College here
at 11 am.

Speaking at the discussion, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs
Minister AnisuL Huq said Bangladesh Red Crescent Society is a friend of
people during disasters.

The volunteers of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society worked hard to minimise
the loss and damage during the recent severe cyclone ‘Fani’, he added.

Chaired by Bangladesh Red Crescent Society chairman Hafiz Uddin Majumder,
MP, the discussion was addressed, among others, by Disaster and Relief senior
secretary Md Shah Kamal and vice-chairman of the society Dr Md Habib Millat.
