DHAKA, March 29, 2018 (BSS) – Bangladesh Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations has called for adopting a resolution at the United Nations General Assembly aiming to ensure the safety and security of peacekeepers in the wake of recent deaths of a large number of UN peacekeepers at different missions.
“A record number of deaths of peacekeepers took place last year. We have to take united efforts to change the situation,” he told an open-debate at the United Nations Security Council in New York, according to media release received here today.
Representatives of 72 member countries, including 15 member countries of the Security Council and regional organisations, attended the meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in the chair.
The Bangladesh envoy said Bangladesh will support any kind of constructive opinion, including adopting resolution at UNGA, for ensuring the safety and security of peacekeepers.
Momen said prioritising political consideration is a crucial thing in terms of peacekeeping.
“When political process becomes ineffective, the safety of civilians gets unprotected and peacekeepers also fall in enormous danger,” he said.
The Bangladesh Ambassador underscored the need for applying objective political approach in planning and reviewing peacekeeping activities.
