Sudden retrenchment of journalists not acceptable: Hasan

DHAKA, May 05, 2019 (BSS) – Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said sudden retrenchment of journalists by any print or electronic media cannot be acceptable by any means.

“Before retrenching, the life and livelihood of journalists should be taken into consideration. If it is required, prior notices should be served and providing of salaries for several months must be taken into account,” he said.

The minister was addressing a civic memorial meeting on veteran journalist Md Shah Alamgir in Jatiya Press Club auditorium. Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) arranged the meeting.

Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Civil Aviation and Tourism Rashed Khan Menon, MP, Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Hasanul Haq Inu, MP, Senior Journalist Abed Khan, JPC former President Shafiqur Rahman, MP, JPC incumbent President Saiful Alam, Ekattor Television Managing Director Mozammel Haque Babu, DUJ President Abu Zafar Surya and General Secretary Sohel Haider Chowhdury, among others, addressed it.

Paying rich tributes to late Alamgir, the information minister said: “We have many things to learn from Alamgir, who was a very nice man”.

On February 28 last, Alamgir died of cancer.
