Army starts drive against illegal canal structures

CHATTOGRAM, May 4, 2019 (BSS)- The Bangladesh Army is conducting an operation to evict all illegal structures on canals.

In the days to come the drive will be expanded further.

The army will also take action against persons responsible for dumping waste in the canals and will impose penalty.

This was disclosed by Director General (DG), Brigadier General Ahmed Tanvir Mazhar Siddique while speaking at a coordination meeting on re-excavation of canals, expansion, renovation and development of canals for removal of water logging at Dampara Army camp this morning.

The DG said huge waste had been removed but those were dumped in the canal that resulted in filling up the canals again.

“Bangladesh Army which is implementing the mega project at a cost of nearly TK 5700 crore was relentlessly working to reduce water logging in the city and several rounds of meetings with representatives of concerned public utility services and councilors of 41 wards”, he said.

The 12 reasons for the nagging water logging problem in the city and latest development of the ongoing projects have been projected through a slide presentation.

Acting project director Lieutenant Colonel Abu Sadat Mohammad Tanvir, Chief engineer of Chattogram City Corporation Lieutenant Colonel Mohiuddin Ahmed, chief engineer of Chattogram Development Authority, Hasan Bin Shams, project officer-one Major Hasan Mahmud, project officer-2 Major Shahnawaz Mahmud and representatives of public utility services, among others, were present at the meeting.
