‘Govt committed to ensure occupational safety of workers’

RANGPUR, Apr 29, 2019 (BSS) – The present government is committed to ensure
occupational health and safety of workers at all workplaces to boost
productivity on way to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Officials said this at a post-rally discussion held here in observance of
the National Occupational Health and Safety-2019 with the theme of ‘Safe
working atmosphere, Bangladesh towards sustainable development’ on Sunday
afternoon.

The Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) and
Ministry of Labour and Employment with assistance of the Deputy
Commissioner’s office organised the rally and discussion to observe the day.

Earlier, officials of district, police and health administrations, DIFE,
owners, officials and employees of different industries and factories,
political leaders, workers, civil society members and human rights activists
participated in the rally.

Deputy Commissioner Enamul Habib as the chief guest addressed discussion
held on the Town Hall premises with Additional Deputy Commissioner (General)
Syed Enamul Kabir in the chair.

Deputy Inspector General of DIFE at Rangpur office Soma Roy delivered
welcome speech narrating various steps taken by the government to ensure
sound health and safe working environment for workers at workplaces.

Deputy Director at Regional Office of the Directorate of Labour Md
Sadekuzzaman, Additional Police Super Maruf Ahmed, Medical Officer at Civil
Surgeon’s office Dr Nujhat Afroz and Office Secretary of district Awami
League Tauhidur Rahman Tutul addressed.

The speakers discussed the essence of adopting ample steps and using modern
technologies to ensure occupational safety and health of workers at all
workplaces to reduce all kinds of risks and health hazards.

The chief guest called for ensuring congenial working environment at
workplaces by preventing risks like long working hours, exposure to unsafe
materials, noise pollution, inadequate lighting, damages to equipments and
emotional and corporal oppressions.

“Promoting safe, healthy and well-mannered working environment for workers
at workplaces will reduce risk of accidents and health hazards to zero level
increasing productivity on way to achieve the SDGs by 2030,” he added.
