DHAKA, April 28, 2018 (BSS) – National Occupational Health and Safety
Day was observed across the country today with a call to ensure sound health
for all workers and safe working environment for them.

Bangladesh is observing the day nationally for the third time with the
theme “Healthy Workers, Safe Life-Ensure Sustainable Development”.

Different organisations, including Labour and Employment Ministry, took
elaborate programmes, including discussions and rallies, marking the day.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate
messages on the occasion. State Minister of Labour and Employment Ministry
Begum Munnujan Sufian led an awareness rally.

Besides, representatives from International Labour Organisation (ILO)
and different government and non-government organisations took part in the
rally.

The ministry also organised a discussion at Krishibid Institution,
Bangladesh where Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi was present as the chief
guest.

National Occupational Safety and Health Day was first celebrated in
Bangladesh in 2016 through the support of the ILO’s Improving Working
Conditions in the RMG sector programme funded by Canada, the Netherlands and
the United Kingdom.

The campaign has been taken to accelerate action to achieve Sustainable
Development Goal (SDG) target 8.8 of safe and secure working environments for
all workers by 2030.

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work, an annual international
campaign to promote safe, healthy and decent work for workers, is marked on
April 28 every year.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has been marking the day
since 2003.
