Quamrul for re-electing Awami League to achieve middle-income status

DHAKA, March 19, 2018 (BSS) – Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam today urged the electorates to once again vote Awami League to power to help Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to lead Bangladesh for becoming a middle income country by 2024.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh already has progressed to cross the Least Developed Country (LDC) category and the United Nations recognized Bangladesh as deserving to be a developing country status,” said the minister while addressing at a discussion held at Kamrangirchar here.

The people will have to vote Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina repeatedly for achieving the UN’s final recognition, so the country could maintain the economic development indicators for two terms (2018 and 2021), said the food minister.

The development affairs committee of the United Nations at a meeting in New York on March 15 ensured that Bangladesh already has achieved all indicators for the first time to overcome the lower income country status, he said.

He added: “As per the rule, Bangladesh finally will be declared as a middle income or a developing country by 2024, if it [Bangladesh] achieves all the indicators for two consecutive terms.”

“We have to maintain the development trend of the present government for achieving the developing country status,” he mentioned.

The food minister, however, said although per capita income has been fixed to US$1230 or more as the standard to cross the LDC status, per capita income of the Bangladesh stood at US$1272 on an average.
