BAGERHAT, April 20, 2019 (BSS) – Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin today said adequate number of ponds would be excavated in the Sundarbans areas to ensure safe water for the people as well as wild animals.

“We are taking up initiatives to dig sufficient number of ponds in the Sundarbans areas to remove scarcity of water,” he told a meeting on “Doings for coping adverse impact of climate change” in the conference room of Mongla Port Authority.

Deputy Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Begum Habibun Nahar, Secretary of the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry, senior officials of the ministry and other organization concerned, among others, addressed the meeting.

Shahab said the government is embarking on different adaptation measures to face any negative impact of climate change in Mongla area.

Other speakers said Bangladesh is bearing the burden of excessive carbon emissions caused by industrialized nation, which is mainly responsible for global warming, a great challenge for the planet.

Despite having little contribution to global carbon emission, Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries due to adverse impact of global climate change and responsible countries must provide financial and technical supports to developing countries like Bangladesh aiming at tackling its negative impacts, they said.
